Internal Audit of Doctor's Websites and Social Media for ADA

It is critically important for doctors to have their websites reviewed for compliance for several key reasons, primarily to protect patient privacy and avoid significant legal and financial consequences. The two main areas of compliance are the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

This page outlines a framework for an internal audit to assess a doctor's website and social media presence for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The goal is to ensure that digital content is accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, cognitive, and motor impairments.

Scope of the Audit

The audit will cover all public-facing digital platforms controlled by the medical practice, including:

  • Website: The primary practice website, including all sub-pages, patient portals, and linked documents (e.g., PDFs).
  • Social Media: All official social media accounts used by the practice (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, YouTube).
  • Third-Party Content: A review of third-party platforms that the practice embeds or links to, such as appointment schedulers, patient review sites, or external articles, to identify potential accessibility issues.

The audit will be guided by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, which is widely considered the industry standard and is often used by the Department of Justice (DOJ) as a benchmark for ADA compliance.
